The Mid Cape A Great Place to Start
Let's face it just about anywhere you decide to go fishing on the Cape you're bound to find a perfect relaxing spot and it beats a day of work anytime. The Cape has over 360 ponds and lakes that provide the angler a wide variety of good and challenging fishing holes. So it makes perfect sense to just start in the Mid-Cape and work your way around. The Mid-Cape, as the name so implies, disects the Cape in half thus making your fishing destinations much shorter to get to and a heck of a lot more ecconomical.
Choose your poison, there are roughly 365 fresh water ponds and lakes located on Cape Cod. You have the cool waters of Cape Cod Bay or you have the warm waters of Nantucket Sound either provides the best in Mid-Cape Fishing.
How about a Charter Boat
When you talk about fishing the Mid-Cape you're talking pure fun. And there's no better fun than experiencing fishing on a professional charter boat. Captains will take usually up to four fisherman per boat with a choice of 1/2 day or full day charters that leave early in the morning and around one in the afternoon.
If you decide to take a charter you're probably going to need a reservation, boats fill up fast. The captains are well experienced and are very familiar with all the hot spots. The nice part about Mid-Cape fishing boat charters is that all the necessary equipment is normally provided, which means it's less for you to pack on your vacation. They provide all the bait and will usually care a variety of lures and hooks to help make your fishing adventure less cumbersome.
Although the Cape has very mild temperatures you're still going to need to pack a lot of drinking water when you hit the high seas because the sun will do damage. And don't forget to bring the sun screen and your favorite fishing lid. The charters don't normally provide food so you may want to pack a lunch or snack as well.
Party Boats
Unlike the term implies a party boat is simply a large fishing boat designed to carry a lot of people. Like the charter boats they provide all the necessary gear and bait. Everyone is given a rod and you stand along the bow and port sides and drop your lines. This is a great way to introduce your child to the sport of fishing, Everyone has loads of fun and it makes for a great family experience. Party fishing boats usually leave the bigger harbors like in Falmouth, Hyannis, Dennis and Provincetown.
Where to go Mid-Cape Fishing
Upper Cape
Entering the Cape you cross over the Bourne or Sagamore bridges and below you is the Cape Cod Canal. This is a very popular place to start. There is plenty of access along the shoreline. If you're into getting into the water with waders then Pip's Rip is about the only place you'll be able to do this. I't located near the parking lot and just to the left.
On the Cape Cod Bay side there are flats in Bourne by the Army Corps of Engineers where stripers run free.
Mid-Cape
As you enter Barnstable try Sandy Neck Beach which is fantastic for stripers in the summer months. The best time to try your luck would be at low tide. You'll be looking for feeding seagulls, sanbars and seaweed, these are prime hang outs for stripers. At Barnstable Harbor you'll also be able to get a charter fishing boat to get out to the outer sandbars.
Brewster is another popular area when we talk Mid-Cape fishing. Stripers love to hit sand eel espically in the flats off Robin Hill Beach. The tide here moves fast so take that into consideration when fising the flats. Also while your in the area try Paine's Creek Beach. Permits are usually required to park.
Lower Cape
As you leave the Mid-Cape fishing spots you'll continue your fishing adverture by entering Harwich and Chatham, which starts the lowe Cape. Hardings Beach in Chatham is on the Nantuck Sound side and offers some great challenges along the shore line. Concentrate on the channels between the sandbars for the best results. Across the Sound you'll see Monomoy Bay this is a paradise for stripers but you'll need to have a boat, charter or a ferry ride to get out there. Sight Ccasting opportunities are endless. Check the tide very carefully as an incoming tide will produce the best results.
Let's take a look at Nauset Beach, if you like shore casting this is a prime location. The only problem an angler can face here are the crowds. The best time to try your luck would be early mornining or sunset.
Outer Cape
Provincetown is as far as you can go on the Cape. The 560 mile drive from the Upper Cape to the Outer Cape in Provencetown is well worth the trip. This is truely an old New England seaport. Hatches Harbor is great if the tide is going out. Stripers are usually found at the mouth of the harbor. And let's not forget the ultimate surf casting spot of Race Point just around the bend.
No matter where you decide to fish, whether it's on one of the 365 ponds or fresh water lakes on the Cape or if you choose the high seas, Cape Cod offers all anglers the adventures of a life time. So when you think of Cape Cod fishing think Mid-Cape fishing because it truely is a great palce to start.
