Cape Cod Baseball
Cape Cod and Baseball have always been popular terms in the northeast. The two go hand in hand, thus, Cape Cod Baseball. Well a new division of a well established league has formed on the Cape and it's reviving some skills from some of the areas more experienced baseball athletes. The Baseball Clubs of Cape Cod formed the 35 plus division (BCCC35+) to provide Cape Cod with baseball the old fashioned way. Now, this seasoned group of ball players didn't have to just sit around the house thinking about the "Good Olde Days". Instead, they too would provide entertainment for the whole family giving their children an opportunity to see exactly what dad was talking about.
How It All Began
The Barnstable Braves and the Chatham Black Sox who were members of the Cape Cod Veteran's League for several years decided to branch off because of various differences in opinions that made some players feel uneasy of the League's future direction. Hopes were high in creating a new league as they found immediate interest with the Sandwich Sharks. On November 6th the teams met and the first League meeting took place to explore the chances of creating a new well organized league with the three teams. The League chose Sam Fedele to head up their operations by making him commissioner. The first order of business was to find more players to develop a fourth team.
The Cape Cod Baseball League Grows
Through Sam's leadership open workout sessions were introduced at the Dugout Dawgs complex in Hyannis on Sunday mornings. Interest in the league was soon realized as the first session drew over 30 would-be ballplayers and those numbers rose to over 40 in the following weeks. This spurred the addition of not only a fourth team, but a fifth team, as well. The Bourne Bandits were added in January of 2009 and the Dugout Dawgs rounded off the league when they became members in March.
The BCCC35+ Division thus started their inaugural 26 game season in April of 2009 with 5 solid teams comprised of over 80 players. After a 16 game spring schedule and with the collegians beginning their Cape Cod Baseball season in June, as anticipated, the BCCC 35+ Division took an 8 week break in the summer mostly due to field availability.
During the break the League saw a need to re-configure itself due to outside player interest thus, a sixth team was added to the mix with the Buzzards Bay Raiders. Now the BCCC35+ Division of Cape Cod Baseball had over 95 players. It continued playing Cape Cod Baseball with a 10 game fall session in August and the playoff season featuring a double elimination tournament followed in October.
The Cape Cod Baseball League Looks to Expand in 2010
Due to the League's high level of competition, it's sound foundation and the strong camaraderie amongest players found through out the organization, as the the fall session wound down more outside interest became evident. The league has been contacted by other players that have put together teams and want to join the League in 2010. The league is considering expansion by adding 2-4 teams over the off season and strenghtening the level of competition further in the years to come.
First Year Success!
